          US hardwood exporters branch out in Chinese furniture, building sector

          UnitedStates-basedhardwoodexportersareboostingtheirgrowthinChina'sfurniture,decorationandeco-friendlybuildingmaterialmarketsasthenationpushestoacceleratethepaceofitsurbanizationdrive.

          MichaelSnow,executivedirectoroftheAmericanHardwoodExportCouncil,saidthatamidthecontinuinguncertaintyinmanyWesterneconomies,thegrowthrateoftheusageofUShardwoodacrossChinaandSoutheastAsiahasbeenstableoverthepastfewyears.

          TheChinaandSoutheastAsiaregionalmarket,coveringChina,Indonesia,Malaysia,thePhilippines,Singapore,ThailandandVietnam,hasbecomethelargestexportmarketforUShardwoodproducersandaccountsfor52percent,or$1.2billion,ofglobalexportsin2012,withChinaalonerepresenting38percentoftheseexports,accordingtotheforeignagriculturalserviceoftheUSDepartmentofAgriculture.

          TheUSistheworld'slargestproducerandexporterofhardwoodlumber,representing20percentofglobalshipments.Lastyear,UShardwoodshipmentstoChinarose19percentintermsofvaluecomparedwiththepreviousyear.

          ThevalueofalloftheUShardwoodexportstoChinain2012 -suchaslumber,veneer,plywoodandflooringproducts-reacheditshighestvalueeverat$602million.

          HeadquarteredinWashingtonDC,theAmericanHardwoodExportCouncilisaninternationalnon-profittradeassociationoftheUShardwoodindustry.Itrepresentsover100UShardwoodexportersandmajorhardwoodproducttradeassociationsintheUS.

          "EventhoughthefuturedemandofChina'sfurnituremarketcontinuestodependonthedomestichousingmarketandthecountryhasimplementedanumberofpoliciestostabilizethepropertypricesandpreventhousingspeculation,Chinahasenteredthesecondphaseofurbanization,whichwillleadtoanotherwaveinconsuminghardwoodandtimberproducts,"Snowsaid.

          HeaddedthatChina'sfasturbanizationprocessandrigidhousingdemandtoacertainextenthavecreatedanewgenerationofincreasinglyaffluentconsumerswhoarekeentooutfittheirhomesandofficeswithqualityinteriorfurnishingsmadewithUShardwood.

          AccordingtoChina's12thFive-YearPlan(2011-15),thenationplanstoreducecarbonemissionsperunitofGDPby17percentin2015.

          "ThisispartoftheChinesegovernment'sstrategytoeliminatetheimpactcausedbyglobalwarming,decliningecosystemsandwatercontamination,"Oliversaid.

          TheChinesegovernmentalsoplanstobuild1billionsquaremetersof"green"buildingsbetween2011and2015,andtoensurethateco-friendlybuildingsaccountfor20percentofallthenewurbanbuildingsby2015.

          AnotherfactorthathasstimulatedChina'shardwoodimportsisthegovernment'sprotectionofthecountry'swoodresources.

          Chinabegantoprotectitsforestsin1998afteritwashitbyatimbershortageofabout60millioncubicmetersperyear.ThecountrywillbeheavilydependentonimportedtimberresourcesfromtheUS,Canada,Russia,GermanyandCameroonforthenext30years.

          Tofurtheraiditsglobalexpansion,theAmericanHardwoodExportCouncilannouncedthelaunchofacomprehensiveenvironmentalprofilingsystemforUShardwoodwithwide-rangingimplicationsforthesector.


          ThenewAmericanHardwoodEnvironmentalProfilewillprovideguidanceonUShardwood,demonstratingthelegalityandsustainabilityofeveryconsignmentoflumberandveneerdeliveredtoglobalexportdestinations.


          ItwillalsoprovideaccesstoinformationontheidentityoftheUSsupplier,productdescription,qualityofthewood,commercialandscientificspeciesname,placeofharvest,anddocumentsdemonstratingnegligibleriskofillegalharvest.


          Snowsaidthesystemwillhavewiderimplicationsformanufacturersandthe"green"buildingindustriesinChinaandacrossSoutheastAsia.


          "Overthenextfewyears,wewillseeatransformationinhardwoodmanufacturinginChinafromlowcosttomedium-andhigh-endproductsusinghighergradesofwood,aswellasariseinmanufacturingcentersinVietnam,"saidJohnChan,regionaldirectoroftheAmericanHardwoodExportCouncilforSoutheastAsiaandChina.
